Your mental health has more of an impact on your physical health than you might realise. Have you ever tried to work out when you’re having a bad day? Chances are, you probably just ended up lying in bed. Your mindset is everything. 

Keeping mentally fit requires daily effort. You can’t stop working out once you reach your goal weight. Likewise, maintaining a positive mind needs ongoing work. 

But there’s things that you can do to help you reach (and maintain) a healthy mind. This will be different for everyone, so find what works for you. Here’s a few of our favourites.

Add indoor plants. 

Research from the University of Melbourne and RMIT University has shown that plants make you healthier. And five is the lucky number of plants that you should include in your home, according to Plant Life Balance research. It can dramatically improve your mental health, as well as boost air quality. 

Humans need to be connected to nature. When you’re around plants, your brain becomes relaxed, in tune and able to think clearly. You can use those higher brain powers when your mind is relaxed. 

Practice gratitude. 

Start each day giving thanks for what you have. It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking at what’s lacking from your life – thanks to society constantly saying you need this or that. If you can express what you’re thankful for, this will improve your mental wellbeing. From your dog to hearing an old favourite song the radio, there’s so many good things that go unnoticed in our busy lives. 

Have a go-to support system. 

Think about the closest people in your life. This is your support team. Nothing beats confiding in a good friend who you trust, if you need to work through something. Just talking about it and getting ‘outside’ your mind can make a big difference. It’s been proven that the most important element of happiness is connections. 

Carve out a little time each day for your mental health. There’s nothing more important than taking care of your mind.
