What is Remedial Massage, and how can it help treat my health concern?
Healthdirect.gov.au says that Remedial Massage is a complementary therapy that aims to treat muscles that are damaged, knotted, tense or immobile.
It is useful for a number of problems that affect the muscles, tendons and bones and can address a number of other health problems.
It’s used to locate and repair damaged areas of the body and speed up the body’s own healing processes. The pressure applied in this healing treatment can either be strong and deep or gentle and shallow, depending on the problem.
Emergency Services Health subscribes to the Australian Regional Health Group (AHRG) Alternative Therapy Database, including Remedial Therapy.
To be on that database, remedial massage providers must belong to an AHRG accredited association, who will ensure that they qualify from both an educational, experience and skill level.
When used to treat a specific health concern, Remedial Massage sessions will focus on a specific area of the body and will be most effective when repeated on the targeted area several times within a short period of time.
Therefore sessions would normally take 20-30 minutes, but be repeated twice or more per week until the issue has resolved. Our member benefits are designed to maximise this pattern of use.
What are my Remedial Massage benefits and how can I get the most out of them?
Members with Emergency Services Health Rolling Extras cover enjoy a generous $700 Combined Annual Maximum and $1,400 Combined Rollover Maximum Benefit to cover Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Complementary Therapies and Osteopathy.
Remedial Massage is covered under the Complementary Therapies Benefit, together with Chinese Medicine, Remedial Therapy and Myotherapy.
Unlike many of our Extras benefits that cover a percentage of the treatment cost, Remedial Massage has a set benefit of up to $30 per service. Meaning you will receive benefit of up to $30 regardless of the cost of the service.
Members using the service in shorter sessions more frequently, as recommended for specific health concerns, will find they have minimal out-of-pocket cost when claiming the benefit of up to $30.
However it’s important to note that members using their benefits on longer full body massages, that can cost in the vicinity of $100, should expect out-of-pocket costs.
How many sessions should you have per week?
Consult with your massage therapist or healthcare provider to find what treatment plan is right for you, but research indicates two to three sessions per week is usually a good amount to provide continuity and give you the chance to provide feedback and any updates to your health professional.
How many weeks should sessions last for?
Again, consultation with your massage therapist or health care provider will help determine what is right for you, but research shows that treatment journeys can last up to 5 or 6 weeks depending on the issue.
Positive signs that the treatment is taking affect include relaxed muscles, more mobile joints, and stimulated blood supply.

Accredited exercise physiologists offer a range of services which include behavioural coaching, health education, exercise counselling and physical rehabilitation. Services include the prescription of tailored exercise programs, promoting leisure-time and incidental activity, and counselling to reduce sedentary behaviours.
